Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Our Team are Katie and Lims Wedding Marchers!
My daughter Katie left the UK in January 2015 to take up a short 3 month placement as a volunteer vet for IAPWA in Borneo. She very quickly fell in love with her work and a young man called Lim.
3 years later she is the resident vet for IAPWA Borneo and is marrying her sweetheart Lim on April 7th 2018.
As part of the celebrations the bride, the groom, bridesmaids, dad and various members of the family ranging in age from 20 to 57, are going to march, climb, hobble or crawl up the mysterious and majestic Mount Kinabalu.
Mount Kinabalu stands at 4095 metres above sea level is the highest mountain in Malaysia and the 20th most prominent mountain in the world by topographic prominence, Impressive eh! It is also one of the most popular 'bucket list' destinations in the world. http://www.mountkinabalu.com/mount-kinabalu/introduction
Borneo is the third largest island in the world and is known for its lush rainforest, beautiful but endangered orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears and pygmy elephants. Sadly it is also home to thousands of beautiful stray dogs that struggle daily to survive.
In January 2015 Katie joined the newly set up (TNR) trap, neuter, release, IAPWA- Borneo project in Kota Kinabalu. The project treats, neuters and vaccinates stray dogs, releases them back to their original territory or rehomes them via local adoptions. They also support the local voluntary organisation SPCA providing neutering and veterinary treatment for the dogs and cats in their shelters.
Katie has remained as the resident vet supported by a vet nurse and short term volunteers from all over the world. Together they have provided veterinary care for thousands of street dogs and cats.
So.. why are we doing it ?
The reason we will all be there is Katies wedding. Katie is there because of her passion for her work and because of that work she met her sweetheart Lim. So we thought we would celebrate their marriage by supporting the charity that brought them together.
There are approximately 10,000 stray dogs in the Kota Kinabalu region. IAPWA receives no government funding and is solely run on charitable donations, they desperately need funding to continue their vital work. Thats where you come in .....
If we can raise £4000 this could fund another resident vet for a year, enabling IAPWA to treat, vaccinate and TNR more stray dogs, support the local SPCA with veterinary care and do outreach work.
£2000 could fund a separate area for puppies so that they are less at risk of catching distemper or parvo from adult dogs before they are fully vaccinated.
Any amount raised up to that will fund essential equipment such as an autoclave, stethoscopes, vaccines and medical supplies.
