Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Here is my story....In the soaring temperatures of a Scottish heatwave, along with 5 other souls I will be attempting to walk the West Highland Way over the course of 5 days.....

We are getting together to do this in aid of FEAT- a charity set up in memory of our wee pal Fiona Agnew. Sunday the 14th (the day we aim to have finished the walk) will be what would have been Fi's 39th birthday hence the timing of the walk.

FEAT is a registered charity (SC044017) established following the sudden death from sepsis of Dr Fiona Agnew in August 2012. It's main aim is to stop sepsis through raising awareness and funds to research this life threatening condition.

I first met Fi back in 2002 when we started as SHO's (baby medical doctors) in general medicine at the Southern General Hospital in "Sunny Govan", Glasgow. For those 2 years we worked together, sat exams together, moaned about nights/receiving etc..., had the odd (OK regular) cheekly midweek South Side glass of vino together and generally had a ball (whilst working v hard I'll have you know!). Fiona was a fantastic doctor and colleague- hard working, modest, clever and so much brighter than she ever gave herself credit for. Great craic on a night out in particular- her greek style dancing skills at my wedding had to be seen to be believed. After a foray into renal medicine in the Monklands she embraced GP training with the same vigor and tenacity as her hospital medicine training.

All was well- she gave birth to young Robert in June 2010 and was looking forward to the birth of baba number 2 in September 2012. However things changed in the preceeding month- after arranging the admisison of her husband Craig to hospital with sepsis Fiona herself was shortly therafter admitted with sepsis on the evening of Friday the 24th of August 2012. Baby Isla was stillborn at 05.10 am Saturday the 25th of August. By this stage Fi was in an unstable and critical condition. For the remainder of the day and into the night the medical staff worked tirelessly to save her life, but sadly they were unsuccessful and Fi died at 01:50am on Sunday the 26th of August. Craig made a full recovery eventually but was seriously unwell with sepsis thoughout Fi's illness.

This septic illness attacked Fiona's body in a matter of hours, with no warning and even by the time she had reached hospital, it was effectively, too late. Craig, her husband, and father of Robert, has set up FEAT, the main objective of which will be to stop sepsis through funding research into the condition, its treatment and also to raise awareness of it.
