More than 28 years ago, The Hospice of St Francis provided end of life care for my mum. They were a huge source of support for my dad, who was left raising me and my brother on his own.
He took to fundraising for them, and was a regular visitor to their coffee mornings, and soon became known as their "official santa".
Upon his recommendation in 2012, my husbands nan spent the end of her life being cared for in the Hospice, where her and the family were treated with love and dignity.
In December 2020 their santa returned, but this time as an inpatient to recieve his own end of life care. The care he recieved was second to none. His bed was moved into the lounge for large groups of family visitors and the Salvation Army band came to play to him as well. All were welcomed by the hospice. And i will never forget the happy sound of his voice when he phoned me the day he was moved there from the hospital. He was at peace there.
Throughout covid, not only did they continue their amazing work with patients, but they continued to provide virtual and over the phone bereavement support to my (at the time) 5 yr old son, who took the loss of his grandad extremely badly.
