Event: Twins Trust Ben Nevis challenge, on 12 June 2021
Climb Ben Nevis on Saturday 12th June 2021 and raise money to help families who have lost one or more of their Multiples

Story

There are many reasons I decided to do this hike but mainly because I wanted to raise money for such an amazing cause. Just over 2 years ago I was pregnant with my twins and at the 28 week scan found out that my daughter was not growing properly. Had she been a single baby they would have delivered her there and then but because she was a twin they told us that she would have to stay in there and we would just have to hope that she could survive long enough to give her brother the best shot, 32 weeks. What followed was weekly scans to see if she was still alive. Those weeks were the hardest weeks of my life and some that I will never forget. I was petrified of every scan but also wanted to know that she was still fighting. At 31 weeks and 4 days I had an additional scan, set up by my local midwife as a specialist was at the hospital that day, and this scan saved my daughters life. We were told that the twins had to be delivered now and that there was no time to even blue light me to the local hospital who specialised in babies under 800g. It was a horrendous few hours but soon we had two babies, our son weighing a surprising 5lb but our daughter weighing just 1lb 7ozs. What followed was a life changing 4 weeks of our son in the neonatal unit and 7 weeks with our daughter. During that time we were supported by some amazing members of staff and witnessed the full spectrum of outcomes of babies born into the neonatal unit. I am thankful everyday that we are now 2 years down the line and both are doing well. We do have issues but we face these and are just so grateful for everyday.

I also have a number of friends who have suffered bereavements of unborn babies and infants, and have seen the heartbreak and immense impact this has on not only the individual but also close family and friends. Some of my really close friends have had to suffer with this pain and I have felt completely helpless and powerless to do anything. This hike allows me to do something positive and to raise money so that someone who has to go through this unthinkable pain can have some support and someone to talk to.
