Story
I have been part of the Project Volunteer family since 2011 and have never looked back. It started with a trip in September of that year where I was privileged to see first hand the excitement and joy Project Volunteer brought to those young people who have so little.
Since that trip I have become more and more involved with the charity and in January became the Chair. I now go every year as a trip leader and am working towards building on the string and trusted partnership we have established in Botswana with SOS Children's Villages.
Our goal is to set up a Project in Botswana where the young people who are now growing up and taking steps out of the Villages can volunteer themselves. We will support them in adopting some of our tried and tested methods, enabling them to deliver interactive activities across the Villages all year round. The aim being to build the confidence and skills of those young people.
In addition to this we plan to start offering bursaries for small business or skills development ideas of those young people, as well as engaging local businesses to link in with Project Volunteer and SOS Children's Villages to really start developing opportunities for their youth.
There is a lot to be done and increasing awareness of what we are doing is our first challenge. We will need increased support and funds to make these things happen, and the September trip will be a fantastic opportunity to meet key people face to face and start making our plan a reality. As well as continuing with the valuable activities we have been doing every year so as to ensure the new younger children build similar trusted relationships with us and experience our positivity, dependability and love.
