People with learning disabilities say: 'we want to live our lives in the way we want to, getting good support from kind & friendly people. We want to lead healthy lives, have strong relationships, travel where we live, have good housing, try new things, be listened to & be part of our communities’.

Story

Hello

I'm running the Brighton Marathon in April 2011 to raise money for Grace Eyre. I've been working at this charity since July 2010 and the fact I'm willing to run 26.2 miles to raise money for it should speak volumes to friends and family who will be aware that I'm not particularly known for my love of running. Announcing 'I'm running the Brighton Marathon' has elicited a variety of responses from friends and family, stunned silence followed by laughter would appear to be the most popular reaction to date!

Grace Eyre is a forward thinking charity that supports adults with learning disabilities to achieve their dreams and wishes. All money raised from the Marathon is going towards our Travel Buddy scheme which supports adults with learning disabilities to travel on public transport or on foot either independently or with a travel buddy. I read somewhere that around 90% of adults with learning disabilities are reliant on using minibuses or getting lifts, this massively impacts on their freedom and choice. Our scheme has already made a huge difference to people who have been trained and we're currently working with around 28 people though there are many more who would like this kind of support. Some trainees now travel on their own and are training others to do the same. This scheme relies on volunteers and donations to keep it going. I'd like to raise at least £750 from my suffering to help support the continuation of this scheme.

Please dig deep and donate now, running hurts. I have to admit that when I watched the video of the course, I genuinely felt quite sick. I'll do it, even if I have to crawl to the finish line, but I need your support and yes, by support I mean your cash!
