James Harvey, Matthew Gill, William Denny, Thomas Bridgwater and Daniel Williams are five friends who will be kayaking the length of the River Severn from its mountain source at Plynlimon in Mid-West Wales to where it meets the sea at Gloucester Docks. The five man team will be supported by their team manager and driver Simon Green.
This epic 200 mile journey will take place between the 2nd and 7th of August 2021.
- Day 1: We will walk the first 12 miles of the river's course from the source marker post on the Plynlimon Massif through the Hafren Forest along the Severn Way footpath to our first camp near the town of Llanidloes.
- Day 2: Our first day on the water will see us kayak 30 miles from Llanidloes to Welshpool. This leg of the journey will involve navigating very fast, braided river with large boulders and countless sections of white water.
- Day 3: On this day we travel from Welshpool over the border into Shropshire, England and down to the historic market town of Shrewsbury. This leg of the journey sees the river Severn grow in volume as it's joined on the Anglo-Welsh border by the River Vyrnwy.
- Day 4: We move from Shrewsbury down to the town of Bridgnorth. The day will start with us navigating the Shrewsbury Weir before moving downstream to pass through the giant S bends of the River Severn near the village of Cressage. We will pass the Wrekin before going under The Iron Bridge in the town of Telford before traversing through the infamous Jackfield rapids prior to our arrival in Bridgnorth. - Day 5: This day of the trip will see us head toward our day's objective of Worcester. This 30 mile section of the trip will see us pass through the towns of Bewdley and Stourport-on-Severn. This leg of the journey also sees us navigate three large weirs at Stourport, Holt Fleet and Bevere Island.
- Day 6: After we pass through our first weir of the day at Diglis Island, Worcester, we will continue downstream to the Upper Lode Lock-Weir at Tewkesbury, before making our way down to Maisemore Weir, just to the north of Gloucester. At this point the fresh water of the River Severn meets the salt water of the Severn Estuary and technically 'the sea' will have been reached. The Severn Estuary has one of largest tidal ranges in the world (15 metres) and is far too dangerous to navigate by kayak beyond this point. The trip will end at the lock entrance of Gloucester Docks. Where we will be celebrating the end of the trip with a little party and many hours of sleep.
Throughout the trip we will be camping and roughing it with the help of our support van. We will complete the trip come rain or shine dressed as pirates. All offers of assistance and donations to Cancer Research UK are greatly appreciated.
