The World Transplant Games 2009 · 13 October 2008
Hi Everyone
I can't believe that I have been selected to represent the UK at the World Transplant Games in Australia in August 2009-whoopeeeeeeeee!! I am so excited however I know that with lots of hard training and dedication-I will try my very best to bring back a medal for my country! I am a member of Gateshead Harriers and training twice a week and my goal in Australia is to take part in the 100m, 200m and 400m track.
I have been lucky enough to represent the UK on three occasions-Nancy, France in 2003, Canada 2005 and Bangkok Thailand in 2007. I have also reresented the UK at the European Heart and Lung Transplant Games twice in Naples, Italy in 2006 and Vichy France in 2008-see my photo with my medals.
I received my new heart as a child and it is only now as an adult that I realise how lucky I was to have been given this amazing chance of a second life. Throughout my childhood I have promoted Organ Donation however it wasn't until recently, Irealised what a massive impact my life saving operation had on the transplant world and also how my fit and healthy lifestyle has given hope to others on the waiting list and also made people talk about organ donation with their family.
My attendance at the WTG is not just about sport-it is about making people realise how important transplantation is to every single person in the UK-although they may not actually realise it! Anyone could need a transplant-maybe you! I was a healthy baby until one day I caught a bug which changed my life completely. What would you do if this happened to a member of your family?
I have to raise over £2000 to pay for my attendance at the WTG Australia 2009 however I would also like to raise more to support the wonderful Charity Transplant Sport UK who have literally changed my life. The Charity exists solely on generous donations and I know when we go to Australia-we will have a fantastic team of medics to look after us-many of whom pay from their own pockets to attend-please help me to help them to attend too-to look after myself and my transplant friends.
So please help me to raise my sponsorship money and I will do my very very best in Oz. Most importantly-I want my participation to create lots of positive PR to encourage people to talk about Organ Donation and sign onto the NHS Organ Donor Register by calling 0845 60 60 400 or logging onto www.uktransplant.org.uk
Today, 14h October 2008 is a very special day to myself and my family as,21 years ago, on this very day, I received my new heart at Newcastle Freeman Hospital - My participation is also a tribute to the amazing family who made that incredible decision to save my life through organ donation. Words are never enough to express my thanks to them.
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. Please pass it on to everyone you know but most importantly-ask them to sign onto the NHS ODR-Thanks.
With love to you all
