East Kent Hospitals charity is the NHS charity for EKHUFT and raises funds for the wards and services provided by them. We are enormously grateful for any support we receive, whether it is a financial donation, helping to raise awareness of our work, planning a fundraising event.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome barged it’s way into our lives a few weeks ago, when my fit, healthy and active dad, Nigel, experienced weakness in his legs which quickly escalated to him becoming completely paralysed, unable to breath without a ventilator and being admitted to Intensive Care.

We quickly learnt that this illness, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, was an incredibly rare and serious illness that can strike practically anyone after they’ve had some kind of infection- in dads case, it was likely brought on by Covid-19.

Several weeks on from the day he was taken into hospital, every day is a complete rollercoaster of emotions for us as a family and we still do not know how/when dad will recover and what the future looks like for him.

This whole experience has been completely surreal for dad and us as a family. During the last few weeks, while trying to come to terms with what has happened and being at dads bedside at every opportunity, my family and I have been so grateful for the support and help the ITU staff have provided both my dad and us. No question has been too silly, no worry too small-they’ve handled it all with kindness, compassion and honesty.

During April, dad was planning to walk 100 miles with his best friend (and let’s face it, his favourite child) Martha the Golden Doodle. As he won’t be doing that now (and the cruelest irony is that he will have to learn to walk again eventually) we have decided to do this for him instead, raising as much money as we can for the ITU unit who have cared for him so far, and other critical care units within the East Kent trust.

Please give anything you can to help raise funds and awareness of this horrendous illness which robs the sufferer and their family of the person they knew and normal life. Thank you 🙏🏼
