ARC Trusts - Natterjack Toad Appeal
This appeal is to help safe guard the future of Natterjack Toads in the UK.
Natterjack Toads are one of Britain rarest amphibians. They are naturally restricted to three main habitat types, costal dune systems, upper saltmarsh and lowland heath. The are smaller than the common toad, the have shorter legs so are bad swimmers however they are relatively fast on land earning the nickname the ‘running toad’.
The Problem
Over the last century the natterjack toad has experienced a significant decline in population and range primarily as a result of habitat loss and fragmentation. North Wales in particular suffered a severe loss in breeding sites during the 20th century, until eventually all of the known breeding sites were considered extinct. Historically common on the heaths of Surrey and Hampshire and also around the coast of East Anglia, sadly only one or two colonies now remain. Natterjack toad are now restricted to fewer than sixty sites across the UK.
Why are the important?
They are active predators in the middle of the food chain and need large areas of bare ground or very short vegetation for hunting their invertebrate prey. Outside the breeding season Natterjack Toads live on dry land so this is as important habitat as the breeding ponds.
How will your contribution help?
ARC protects and enhances existing nature reserves, with a focus on working with landowners to keep existing ponds healthy and create new ones and help them meet Favourable Conservation Status targets.
