Story
In October 2008 I’ll be running the first London half marathon and putting myself through some pain in support of the Down’s South charity. Down’s South provides children with Down Syndrome specialist speech and language therapy which is currently unavailable anywhere else. They have recently won the Lothian Award which is an award that goes to the group/organisation who has made the most significant difference to the lives of children with Down Syndrome.
Children with Down Syndrome are usually good communicators but they have to rely on non-verbal skills longer than other children. This is because they typically experience significant speech and language delay. Since speech and language is central to progressing mental abilities and social skills, it’s essential the development of these skills remain a focus right from infancy.
My 2 ½ year old godson has been lucky enough to benefit from the great specialist work that Down’s South provide. I’ve been able to see what a difference this charity has made not only to the children themselves but their families too.
I’m so proud of the progress he and his little friends have made. The challenge now is to ensure Down’s South are able to continue their work as well as expand the services and resources so they can help many more children currently on the waiting list for a place.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Down's South London gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Thank you for any support you can give.
Kay.
