We tackle Ocean threats by turning Ocean Science into understandable, practical tools; engaging people through film and popular culture; and running engagement programmes for youth. As the first generation to deeply understand Ocean issues, we’re also the last generation who can stop them.

Story

Sailing round the world

I am racing around the world with the Clipper Race,  onboard one of 11, 70ft racing yachts.   Departing Aug 19, returning Jul 20. I have always been driven to be the best version of myself. Sometimes I have to explore my limits in order to do this. This is one of those occasions.

Covering 40,000 miles I will cross the Southern, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, during 8 legs, lasting up to 5 weeks. Alongside up to 22 fellow crew mates we will operate a shift system, 6 hrs off, 6 on at day and 4 off, 4 on at night to race the yacht 24/7. Sharing the on-deck sailing responsibilities as well as the below deck chores including cooking. Much of the time the boat will be at a 35 deg angle making even sitting on the loo, challenging. I will sleep in a cloth bunk, have a small locker for my belongings, and showering - well who knows if there is any chance of that!

There are risks and conditions with this challenge unlike any I have endured before. The greatest for me, being the confinement with my fellow humans.

By 2050, it is likely there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

31 years from now, it is estimated there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. 80% comes from land, and is created by us. The potential harm to human health is catastrophic not to mention the impact on sea life. Plastic Oceans support  research, education programs and industry to help reduce the plastic footprint.

I hope my journey will help me raise awareness and do something about it for future generations.
