The catalyst for our efforts will be the upcoming 350th anniversary and The 1664 Challenge where serving marines and veterans will come together to complete an extremely tough and gruelling challenge (see below), Keith Breslauer will join the Royal Marines in one of the legs and will kayak along with other marines from Cherbourg to Poole (85 nautical miles+ ) over a 20+ hours stretch.
We at Patron are proud lead sponsors along with our friends, both personal and corporate of the Royal Marines 1664 challenge as part of our on-going work to support and assist those injured or disabled through military service. We have provided internships, located employment and training opportunities, and mentored those unable to continue military careers; heightened awareness in both the business and local communities especially of the needs of our injured servicemen; and raised significant funds – but much more is needed.
On the 4th February, Royal Marines set off from close to the Russian border, 400km north of the Arctic Circle, and ski 1664 km south to Stavanger. Averaging a marathon a day on ski’s they will cross some of the most inhospitable terrain northern Europe has to offer. In Stavanger they will board a yacht and sail 1664 miles to Cadiz. Swapping yacht for bikes, they will then cycle north through Spain, over the Pyrenees and through France to Normandy Beaches - a total of over 1664km in 17 days. There they will hop into kleppers and kayak for 48 hours across the channel to Portsmouth. Finally they will run 1664 km around England, Wales and Scotland before completing a ‘moon-light’ 30 mile run around London on the 24/25 Jul. Before a final historic march through the City of London. Over 2500 Royal Marines will be taking part along the way.
