12 years ago, I was diagnised with Ulcerative Colitis. Unfortunately the diagnosis was only made after I'd had emergency surgery to remove my perforated bowel. I was left with an ileostomy meaning that my poo is collected in a bag on the outside of my abdomen. It was hard for the first couple of months following surgery, however in a strange way, I'm grateful that I've not had to live with the pain, constant toilet stops and complicated treatment regimes that other IBD sufferers go through. My mum was diagnosed with Crohns 2 years ago, so I've seen how difficult it is for Drs to find the right treatments for people. I'm also a nurse in colo-rectal surgery, I see lots of patients having surgey for their IBD.......research funded by Crohns and Colitis UK could help find other treatments and hopefully one day a cure for both Crohns and Colitis.
