Headstart4Babies is a small charity raising awareness of plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, two little-known skull conditions which can affect young babies. It also provides help and advice to families face with the condition and raises money to assist families on low incomes to proceed with treatment.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Not long after Caoimhìn was born, it was noticed that he had a flattening to one side of his head. He also had great difficulty turning his head to the right side. My health visitor advised to reposition him and he was sent for treatment to physio for his neck. While his neck has improved and can now turn his head both ways. His head has got a lot worse. Caoimhìn has reflux so can not have prolonged periods of tummy time so we purchased a range of different things to try and help but nothing is working. And if anything has got a lot worse over the past 5 months. He has now been diagnosed with severe Brachycephaly and mild plagiocephaly. Brachycephaly is when the skull grows disproportionately wide compared to its depth. Plagiocephaly is a flattening to one side of the head. His forehead is also now bulging at one side. Because Caoimhìn has a severe case it will not correct itself without helmet therapy. The Nhs do not fund this treatment. They say it is purely cosmetic. They say that it will get better through time, but do not highlight that it is only mild cases that will correct itself.  They also do not think of development problems that may occur. Caoimhìn can not roll from his belly to his back because the flat side of his head prevents him from doing so. This stops him from building back strength and as a result can not sit. Somthing you would normally see a 7 month baby being able to do or at least making an attempt. They do not take into consideration the impact this could have longterm. He would never be able to wear a bike helmet. It would prevent him in the future being able to take part in certain sports. As well as the mental impact it would have on him. I am trying to raise as much money as possible to be able to help correct his condition. The treatment costs £2025. This includes his helmet as well as checks every fortnight. I have been told because of how severe Caoimhìns is, he will need to wear his helmet for 5 months and attend every other week for adjustments and checkups. If anyone could donate anything big or small. It all helps. I would also like to raise awareness of this condition and the affects it has on babies. Any money raised will go directly to headstart4babies, and in turn they will pay it directly for Caoimhìns treatment. Thankyou for reading.
