Story
Crofton Pumping Station was built in 1807-9 to raise water 40 feet from springs of water in the chalk to the summit level of the Kennet and Avon canal. Nowhere else in the world can people experience the sight, sound, vibration and smell of a Boulton & Watt steam pumping engine running at full power, doing the job it was built to do back in 1812.
Every year Crofton provides parking and refreshment facilities for the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.
However this unique Grade 1 listed industrial monument now needs your help.
The building of the Berkshire & Hampshire Extension Railway in 1862 physically separated Canal and Pumping Station.
Access to the Pumping station and car park is through a narrow tunnel under the railway, then up a steep staircase, making it inaccessible for many.
We wish to reconnect Crofton with its canal to ensure a sustainable and accessible future for the Site, by creating a fully accessible route from the Crofton canal side to the pumping station and car park.
We are looking for £50,000 from you to help start this project.
