We support people with learning disabilities to lead and live great lives. Whether at home, in the community or a short break, our person first support promotes real choice and independence. We work with each person to design their own support, and enjoy their home, a career, and / or hobbies.
Story
Thera Trust is a national charity working towards a more inclusive society, where people with learning disabilities are empowered to lead and live great lives. We have built a strong reputation for providing high-quality, person-centred support that promotes independence, dignity, and choice.
Alongside this, we recognise that some of the people we support may also be LGBTQ+ and may be facing difficult experiences such as struggling to come out, feeling unsafe after coming out, experiencing bullying or rejection, or in some cases facing isolation or homelessness. We are committed to offering support that is safe, understanding, and compassionate, so that every person feels accepted, respected, and able to be themselves without fear.
Our focus is on standing alongside each individual, helping them build confidence, stability, and a genuine sense of belonging in their communities.
We currently support more than 3,000 people with learning disabilities, providing personalised support that reflects each person’s unique needs, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. We believe that everyone deserves to be valued, respected, and given the opportunity to live a fulfilling life. Through supported living, community support, and short breaks, we help people build confidence, gain independence, form meaningful relationships, and feel a true sense of belonging.
We are committed to treating every person with dignity, compassion, and respect, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, faith, or background, ensuring everyone is welcomed, included, and empowered to be themselves.
Gig Buddies is about helping people meet new friends and enjoy shared experiences. It’s a friendly, social project where people can go to concerts, theatre shows, meals out, and even camping trips together. Activities often take place monthly, giving people regular opportunities to connect, build friendships, and have fun in the community.
Participants come from a wide range of places, including Glasgow, West Lothian, and Edinburgh, creating a diverse and welcoming network of people. The project is open to people across the UK, helping individuals connect beyond their local area and meet others who share similar interests.
