Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm not a runner or a cyclist, I'm just a 40 something mummy who's a bit crazy....so I'm going to drop elegantly from the pod of the i360 and take in the beautiful Brighton seafront scenery as I journey 450ft to solid ground, where I hope a large cocktail, Tom Hardy or Harry Styles (or all three) will be waiting for me....

Why I hear you ask are you doing this Kerry.?

Because I hope my bravery or stupidity (both work for me) will stir something in and you will donate your hard earned cash to the Rockinghorse charity I am doing it for...

Everything you donate will be split 50/50 between two of the charity's projects which are close to my heart because of two wonderful children close to my heart.... Let me tell you more about Aidan and Florence and the two projects....

Aidan Pond is the son of my dear friends Lucy and Simon Pond, we are part of the same church and school community, we took our children to the church toddler group together and had he lived Aidan would have been in Florence's year at school but tragically dear sweet Aidan died aged only 19 months from mitochondrial disease. In Aidan's memory the Pond family established Aidan's Christmas Dinner Project. The project supplies fabulous hampers of food and goodies to families spending Christmas in the Royal Alexandra hospital, the project also provides volunteers on Christmas day to cook the food. It's a very special project, Lucy works tirelessly year round to raise its profile and raise funds to supply more wonderful hampers. In December 2014 Lucy gifted us a hamper, as a special one off - Florence was discharged from King's College Hospital on December 17th after a three week stay recovering from surgery. We used the hamper for a special Christmas Eve family meal, we were lucky to make it home for Christmas but many are not so lucky and the hampers go a long way to cheering patients and families at this special time of year.

The other half of my donations will go to the Paediatric Oncology Consultant Psychologist post that Rockinghorse currently fund. I hope that donations will mean that the post can be extended beyond its current two years. If you know me, you undoubtedly know Florence's story.... Aged just 2, in May 2014, Florence was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer which was at stage 4 and had metastasised to both her lungs, her prognosis was incredibly poor and it was without doubt the worst time in mine and John's lives. Florence took the following seven months of gruelling chemotherapy in her stride, we coped with this way of life with the unwaivering love of our family, friends and community. After a roller coaster ride during which we were told the tumour wasn't shrinking and was inoperable, in November 2014 Florence had surgery to remove her tumour and 2/3 of her liver, recovery was slow and painful but Florence showed amazing strength and in January 2015 as we prepared to move on to tackle the cancer in her lungs we received the amazing news that scans were clear and she was in remission. She has now been drug free since February 2016 and is doing fantastically well. She loves school, Irish dancing, swimming, football, cheerleading and keeps us on our toes.... Physically Florence is amazing, her heart, kidneys and hearing show no signs of damage despite the deadly amounts of chemotherapy she endured, she loves her long hair and is proud of her scars and her journey.................. but, her psychological health and wellbeing are of great concern to us, she has daily struggles which are hard for her and us as a family to deal with. It is well documented that children who have gone through the type of trauma she has are likely to suffer depression and/or other mental health issues as an adult. Yet there is a lack of supportive services designed specifically for this situation. I was at the end of my tether with concern for Florence, searching for a counselling and or talking service that would help her work through things that didn't cost the earth or wasn't too far away, when the Psychologist post at the Alex was filled. We are just about to have our second session and I am hopeful that we will get some help and support to ensure Florence's mental health is as good as her current physical health.
