Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am 'lucky' to be running the London Marathon in 2018 for the Stroke Association. Whilst we were watching the London Marathon 2017 I said "I wish I had done that" and Mark said "it's not too late, why don't you?" Well, those of you that know me might know of a small stubborn streak I have and I thought - why the hell not! Not even 10 minutes later I had applied for a charity place.
Wind forward a few months and here I sit having completed my first 5 mile run for a very long time. I have a long way to go and yes to those that have said "you do know how far it is?" I do know but like I said before I have a very small stubborn streak!
I chose the Stroke Association because it's a cause I have been interested in since my first 'proper' job when I left school. I worked as a physiotherapy assistant and seemed to spend my days putting up pictures of how pillows should be arranged around a stroke patient. We have come a long way since then. However, my days at the old N&N Hospital (I am that old!) taught me what a disaster having a stroke could be. I saw the awful state some patients were left in, some didn't or couldn't go home but I also saw the amazing recovering some patients had.
My job makes me think of the devastation stroke can bring every day too.
However, it became far to real in the last few years, friends have suffered strokes. This made it personal it could be me or you. No matter what age, young or old, it could be us. I have seen first hand the effect it can have on loved ones and their families.
I wanted to raise awareness of stroke and support an organisation that helps others in what often is a very shit time.
So, help me to help others. Think of me in the cold, dark winter months to come, think of all of the uneven pavements I have to face and dig deep.
Thank you, Kerry x
