Human Rights at Sea has been established for the benefit of the international community for matters concerning explicit engagement with human rights issues in the maritime environment. Our aim is to explicitly raise awareness, implementation and accountability of human rights provisions throughout the maritime environment, especially where they are currently absent, ignored or being abused.

Story

There are an estimated 2000 seafarers stranded in Ukrainian waters who desperately need our help. HRAS has launched an emergency appeal and is sending out teams to help get these crews out of a dire situation:

Why am I choosing this specific cause? …

Coming into the shipping world a couple of years ago, I started to be more aware of all that is involved in keeping our daily lives and consumerism running smoothly. While others may see the big machinery, the big $$$, and the high technology around it, I see the people behind it. Because at the heart of this worldwide industry are the seafarers - without their hard work and dedication, none of it would be possible.

I connected with Human Rights At Sea a few months ago and was very impressed with the work they do, their achievements so far, and the messages they put out to the world. They are the no. 1 NGO working towards the protection of seafarers and creating awareness for their challenges.

I was deeply moved by the stories I heard about the extreme hardships seafarers and their families endure during the pandemic, especially concerning physical and mental health. We all know about the humanitarian crew crisis that ensued in 2020, and how long it even took the international community to recognize, de-escalate and then finally start to manage it.

I strongly believe that the seafarers’ contribution to society isn’t valued enough. All too often, too little (if any) light is shed on the difficulties they face as a result of international conflicts and events - or even on a regular day. They’re working in the background, and the media takes too little notice of their concerns. With this fundraiser, I want to create more awareness around the topic, and help to shine the light on them that they deserve! It's time for us to pay them back for ensuring that we can live a comfortable life.

About HRAS: We are challenging abuses at sea one step at a time. We are raising the global awareness of human rights abuses at sea. We have a responsibility to provide independent and objective information on the human rights issues that all those people who work at sea, the supporting families, and those in peril at sea are subject to.
