I have been selected to volunteer with Raleigh International on an International Citizen Service placement (Raleigh ICS) in Tanzania for 12 weeks from September. Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity who work in remote, rural areas to improve access to safe water and sanitation, build community resilience, to sustainably manage natural resources and to protect vulnerable environments. ICS brings together young people to fight poverty in developing countries, whilst also aiming for volunteers to create positive changes within our own respective communities when returning from our placements.

For my placement, I will be staying in a rural community with a host family, working alongside 5 UK volunteers and 6 in – country volunteers to carry out a variety of activities that contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development. As described by our Raleigh Medical Team, I and other volunteers will be subject to ‘basic living conditions, physical and mental stress, as well as challenging climates’ whilst having sparse access to electricity and many basic amenities. When I return, I will be using my experience in Tanzania to carry out an Action At Home Project in my local community.

The UK Government provides 90% of the funding for Raleigh ICS which covers the costs of my training, flights, visas, travel and medical insurance, vaccines, food and accommodation. The final 10% is the £800 which I need to fundraise. NONE of the money you donate goes to me; ALL the money raised goes towards the overall running costs of Raleigh ICS, ensuring other volunteers get the chance to contribute in poorer communities worldwide and make a difference. As I have reached half this target so far, I am asking if you could please dig deep and donate with any contribution wherein your kindness will be helping to make a real, positive and lasting change to those more disadvantaged in society.
