Story
In December last year, my life changed in a way I never ever expected — I was diagnosed with bowel cancer at age 42. Being young, fit and healthy, it came totally out of the blue. I felt fine, had no pain but one small symptom I could have easily ignored. Thankfully I never.
Just weeks later in early January, I underwent major surgery to remove the tumour. It was the most difficult and traumatic time my family and I have ever faced. The fear, uncertainty, and emotional toll was overwhelming and it’s something that will stay with me in ways that are hard to fully put into words. I had to beat this for Dawn, Orla and Lewis. That was all I thought about.
Now, 10 weeks on from surgery, I’m incredibly grateful to say I’m recovering well. I was classed as stage II after further scans and tests, but this experience has changed me. It’s given me a new perspective on life, health, and just how important support, awareness, and early detection really are when it comes to cancer.
That’s why I’ve decided to take on the EMF 10K — something that felt pretty impossible just a few months ago. This run isn’t just a personal milestone in my recovery, but a way to give back and support a cause that is now very close to my heart.
I’m raising money for Bowel Cancer UK to help fund vital research, raise awareness, and support others going through what I have. If sharing my story encourages even one person to get checked, talk to me or experts about symptoms, or support someone they love, then it means everything.
Cancer is really frightening — not just for the person diagnosed, but for everyone around them. I was lucky to have incredible support from my family, friends, and NHS medical team, and I want to help ensure others have that same support and hope.
If you can, please consider donating or sharing my page. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference.
Thanks
Kevin
