Kick Alzheimer’s is the creation of a group of friends and family that are passionate about raising awareness and money for research into preventative treatments and eventually a cure for Alzheimer's Disease.
Alzheimer’s is often thought of as a disease that comes with old age, but it’s not a normal part of aging and it can also affect younger people. It’s thought that over 42,000, or around 5% of people with Alzheimer’s in the UK are under 65. These rare cases of the disease are called early-onset Alzheimer’s and it can affect people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
Early onset Alzheimer’s is particularly harsh for people as they often have young children, a full time career and haven’t saved for retirement. It’s not something employers know how to cope with or one that people recognize.
Alzheimer’s and dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales and experts say its ‘‘the biggest health crisis of our time”.
More than 850,000 people in the UK have dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease and this figure is set to rise
One out of three people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime and one in four NHS hospital beds are occupied by someone with dementia.
Almost one in eight people died from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, with the proportion increasing for the fourth consecutive year.
The annual cost to the UK economy is £26 billion and rising and is expected to more than double in the next 25 years.
Unless a disease-modifying treatment can be found, by 2025 there will be over one million people in the UK living with dementia, and over two million by 2050.
The month of September is World Alzheimer’s Month and so there’s no better time to support Kick Alzheimer’s in raising money for Alzheimer’s Research.
Alzheimer’s Research is the UK’s leading dementia research charity dedicated to diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure.
