Standing at 5,895m, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It is estimated that on a given year anywhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of climbers fail to summit due to altitude sickness...
With the words 'ain't no mountain high enough' ringing in their ears (as they'll be too out of breath to sing!), seven unlikely mountaineers will attempt the intrepid climb to raise funds for the OSCAR Foundation and Hamari Silai. Starting the ascent on July 29th, Finn, Sophie, Lucinda, Angela, Anya, Julian and Harry will wind their way to Barafu Camp at 4673m on August 2nd, before making a night-time push to sign their names in the famous guest book at Uhuru Peak on August 3rd.
While undertaking this challenge, we are raising money to split between two wonderful charities working to support children and women in India:
Cycles to break the Cycle
In rural Karnataka, underprivileged boys and girls face a daily 10km walk to get to the nearest school. Consequently many of them rarely go, missing out on vital education that will help them break out of the cycle of poverty that entraps their communities. With the help of the The OSCAR Foundation, which supports children living in low income communities across India, the money raised will be used to provide bicycles to encourage students and facilitate their journeys. At £50, a single bicycle shared between two children is a low price to pay for the freedom and access to education they represent.
An Uphill StruggleDisproportionately affected by the pandemic and living in a system that often favours their male counterparts, women and girls in Mumbai struggle to get the training and skills they need for well paid work and are forced to rely on back breaking and poorly paid jobs such as peeling prawns in Sassoon Dock. Started by one of OSCAR's first beneficiaries, Maruti Chauhan, Hamari Silai work tirelessly to provide young women in their community with the skills and equipment for tailoring, drastically increasing their prospects. Since leaving OSCAR Maruti and his co-founder Mohan have achieved so much with very limited funding, and the 50% of funds raised and directed to Hamari Silai through a collaboration with OSCAR will provide life changing relief for the recipients and the families they support.
