Kilimanjaro 2020 · 27 June 2020

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Paul Carless has been raising funds for Bloodwise -  the UK's leading blood cancer research and support charity -  for over 5 years.

This year, from 20th - 25th June, I was attempting to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African continent. But Covid-19 means I can't go so I will be climbing the same elevation on the stairs at home. That's 2,630 climbs of the stairs.

COMPLETED!!!!!!

Paul was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia at Christmas 2013. After meeting the real WI Calendar Girls in 2014, he and Tom have undertaken challenges to raise vital funds to help beat blood cancer.

Our challenge this year is again inspired by a song from the The Calendar Girls musical - 'Kilimanjaro' - written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow. The musical is based on the true story of the Yorkshire ladies who produced an alternative WI calendar following the death, from blood cancer, of John Baker.

The song Kilimanjaro describes the rawness of grief; "There's no Mount Kilimanjaro, you can show me that compares to climbing solo, with some cocoa, up a flight of stairs".
