Our names are Kim and Gavin, and for the last 5 years we have supported a good friend of ours with his amazing efforts to fundraise for a charity that means a lot to him for personal reasons. So, this year, we took the plunge ourselves and decided to do something incredible, for a charity that meant something to us.

In October 2022, we will be taking on the massive challenge of climbing Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at an amazing
5894m, it is the tallest free-standing volcano in the world. Not only do we face the actual climb itself, bigger than anything we’ve ever climbed before, but have other challenges to overcome, such as the altitude sickness that the high elevation can bring, low temperatures and high winds.  And we are doing all of this to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre (VCC).

Velindre Cancer Centre is Wales’ Premier Cancer Centre and is one of the largest cancer centres in the UK. It provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people, providing treatment, care and support to patients and their families.

Kim – I am a Staff Nurse on First Floor ward at VCC and proud to be part of this amazing hospital. I have become very passionate about giving my patients as much support as I am able to, helping them through some of the most intense treatments, comforting them through some of the most emotional moments any person can ever go through and supporting their families, all whilst giving the gold standard care that VCC is so well known for. Seeing how this disease affects everyone, from the patients, to their families, to all the staff that are involved in their care, I want to play an important part in raising money so this Centre of Excellence can continue the amazing work that it does every day.

Gavin - I am a Business Owner and Engineer with GMEC Solutions Ltd, and over the past 5 years, since creation of the company, I have supported a charity each year with both event participation, donations and sponsorship. Cancer affects 1 in every 2 people and I have personally been affected, with family, friends and colleagues who have had to struggle with this terrible disease. I have always dreamed of tackling the challenge of Kilimanjaro, and with the opportunity to support such a worthy cause as VCC, I now can fulfil this dream whilst raising much needed funding for the ongoing search for a cure.
