Sri Lanka feels like a second home now and I've been lucky enough to combine my love for social work and surfing during my stint as a long term volunteer for the Rosie May Foundation. Amongst other things I've just started a surf club for local girls and ladies to ditch their chores and the pressures in daily life and to pick up a surfboard and belly ride into the shallows on a Sunday.
Watura Women Surf Club is now happening every first and third Sunday of the month, and the girls jump on the bus to Galle and squash into a three wheeler to Dewata Beach (also where Sahana and its epic egg rolls live) ready to switch their skirts for some t shirts and baggy trousers ready to get their hair wet and get amongst it.
Every one was up for it and there were belly laughs all round and it was nice to see the girls/women so relaxed and happy and enjoying the sea, after spending months talking to them about tales 'after the tsunami' which was often one of destruction and loss.
Each of the women asked that we do it again and I'm saying of course we can, I think it's important we make this a long term club for our local ladies as it's such a simple way to give them a bit of freedom and fun which we all need from time to time, so please donate via www.justgiving.com/kirkswaterwomen or text LKWW99 to 70070 to donate £2
Surf club runs every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. Our last club consisted of 8 women and girls and they LOVED it.
Transport from their home town to Dewata beach and back costs - £1
Surfboard hire costs - £1
Surf lesson costs - £12pp
If it's a one off donation or if you want to sponsor this as an ongoing project then please get in touch.
Every little helps, I just want to be able to keep this going through the support of the Rosie May Foundation who work tirelessly to empower girls and women in Sri Lanka.
Thanks to Ahikava Surf School for providing equipment and Lasa for coaching at Dewata Beach, Galle, Sri Lanka
