We increase the pool of stem cell donors to give patients a second chance of life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In April 2019 our fabulous friend Kirsty Holt was diagnosed out of the blue with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. As you can imagine, this turned their family’s life upside down. Kirsty has battled bravely through three rounds of chemotherapy, having to deal with severe sickness and infections along the way. This has meant her being away from her husband and two small children for many weeks.

Throughout it all Kirsty has been amazing and although it has tested her and they have had very low points, they have remained so positive and not stopped fighting. We are so very proud of her and her family.

Kirsty has currently just finished having her fourth round of chemo and continues to fight with such determination, strength, faith and grace.

Some people who require a stem cell transplant - to save their life - are blessed to be able to find a match within their family, but there are so many people who unfortunately don't have matches. These people need to be linked with a match via the Stem Cell Donor Register and the more people who are on the system, the more lives can be saved. Less than 7% of the UK is signed up to this register! ☹️

If you haven't done already and feel like it's something you could do, please check your eligibility and sign up. It's such a simple and quick form to fill in to find out if you are eligible to be a donor, and if you are ever called upon to save someone, the test/donating is simple.

We are raising money for DKMS for all the people that are signing up as we really appreciate their support. It costs DKMS £40 to register a new donor on the UK stem cell registry. As a charity, they rely on monetary donations from the public to help cover this cost and greatly appreciate any contribution, no matter how big or small. The money donated to DKMS is only used to finance new registrations. Whilst the NHS is very supportive, it falls to charities like DKMS to reach out to potential lifesavers.

‘Team Holt’ are Glyn Spence, Ben Leitch, Dave Voss and Peter Newton who have a wide variety of running experience. They will be running the Rugby Half Marathon on Sunday 27th October to raise money and awareness for DKMS and Blood Cancer. If anyone fancies joining them on the run you would be more than welcome - just let us know https://www.theraceorganiser.com/listed-races/rugby-half-marathon

The more people supporting Kirsty’s wish, to highlight the work of DKMS, the better. Thank you so much for your support x

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
