Story

My story

My name is Kit Crane. In November 2019 I finished a solo bicycle expedition from my home in London to New Zealand, covering nearly 30,000 kilometres through 25 countries. The journey took me 18.5 months to complete.

The expedition is in aid of Parkinson's UK, an organisation very close to my heart. Having now returned home to London, I am continuing to raise money for Parkinson's UK to try to achieve my fundraising target. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

The charity

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years.

The main symptoms are stiff and inflexible muscles, involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body and slow movement.

It is estimated that one in every 350 people are affected by Parkinson's disease and 50 people are diagnosed with the disease every day. This equates to 145,000 people with Parkinson's disease in the UK.

Parkinson's UK are the biggest Parkinson's research funder in Europe, and to date have invested over £85 million in research. Parkinson's UK facilitate research, fast-track better treatments for clinical use, improve clinical trials to maximise success rate, and repurpose currently approved treatments for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's UK also provides day to day support for people with Parkinson's disease, providing a range of services.

Your donation

Parkinson's UK work relies exclusively on donations.

A donation of £10 could pay for two weeks of nutrients to grow brain cells in the lab for research

A donation of £20 could fund an hour of care from a specialist nurse

A donation of £48 could fund a clinical researcher for two hours

A donation of £140 could pay for 10 helpline advisors to provide information and support

I would be fantastically proud if I managed to fundraise £15,000 for Parkinson's UK over the course of my journey, during which time I will also be raising awareness about the disease.

Get involved

More information regarding the expedition can be found on my website www.kitridestheworld.com. I will document the expedition via a blog, which can be found on the "blog" page of my website and on Instragram (@kitridestheworld) and Twitter (@kitridesworld).

I anticipate that reaching New Zealand will take at least a year so there is plenty of time. If you possibly can, please donate.
