In memory of William Whitney

Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire Mind (CPSL Mind) is a county-wide mental health charity. We support local people on their road to recovery from mental health challenges and we campaign against the stigma & discrimination faced by so many people with mental health conditions.

Story

On the 12th February 2020, William Whitney stepped into the path of a lorry on the A16. He was 21 years old at the time and he was killed instantly. He had left a note saying that he had no money, he had no friends, and that his life had no worth. William's dad, Steve, and all his family, friends and his colleagues at Peterborough United Football Club were left devastated. Steve has said that "no parent should ever go through what I have had to this year. William was an amazing young man and I was so proud of the way he was living his life. His death left a huge hole in all of our lives". I encourage you to go and listen to Steve's story directly from him in this interview here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SteveGreenallRadioDJ/tribute-to-william-whitney/?fbclid=lwAR3b9K8qfll_zGuzpH0w_MZnigKPjRdhEkrAEU1d2tl_heKLip4ifaQYtDw

Steve has already completed a fundraiser in William's memory for his 22nd birthday last year, but I would love to help do my bit in his honour and for CPSL Mind, and the people they will help. CPSL Mind provide help and support to local people who are struggling with their mental health. They campaign with you against the stigma and discrimination faced by so many people experiencing mental health challenges. CPSL Mind have been supporting local people with their mental health for more than a century, with their vision of a society in which everyone has positive mental health and feels part of a connected community, at their core.

Please donate what you can for the amazing CPSL Mind, a charity unfortunately a lot of us can relate and resonate with. Also, I would love for as many people to join me as possible for a mile in memory of William Whitney. It would have been his 23rd birthday on the 30th November but as that falls on a Tuesday this year, I am going to organise a group mile for as many people as possible to get involved with on Sunday the 28th November 2021. It would be great to have as many people as possible to join me on this so it is not going to be strictly a mile run, people can walk, skip or crawl round the mile if they like! The main aim of it is to not only raise money for CPSL and to honour the memory of Will, but to also encourage us all to speak about our mental health and to raise awareness of mental health illnesses. We've all got stories that relate to mental health, whether it's a personal journey or someone close to you, and it would be an incredible experience to get everyone involved in such a positive and meaningful activity to share these and to raise money at the same time.
