Hello! I am a nurse working in the Haematology Oncology Day Unit at University Hospitals Dorset. Every single day, our team delivers life-saving systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) to incredibly brave patients fighting cancer.

While our patients show immense strength, the treatment itself takes a heavy toll on their bodies. One of the hidden, daily challenges they face is Difficult Venous Access (DIVA). Chemotherapy drugs, frequent blood tests, and stress can cause veins to become scarred, fragile, or deeply hidden.

Too often, we have to attempt cannulation multiple times just to get a working line for their treatment. This causes unnecessary pain, bruising, and severe psychological distress to patients who are already going through the hardest fight of their lives. It breaks our hearts as nurses to add any extra anxiety to their day.

The Solution: A Portable Vein Scanner

I am taking on the Run Bournemouth 10K to raise money to purchase a medical Portable Vein Finder / Scanner exclusively for our day unit.

This advanced, handheld technology uses near-infrared light to project a live, digital map of the vasculature directly onto the patient’s skin. It instantly highlights deep, rolling, or fragile veins that are completely invisible to the naked eye. With this scanner, we can find a viable vein and secure access safely on the very first attempt.
