Story

As part of its literacy development work, EduSpots' Ghanaian team recognised that students rarely saw their communities or similar communities represented in fiction books. Therefore, they joined up with the Sevenoaks School EduLit team, who were keen to learn about the Ghanaian context and culture, to co-create a story set in Tease, and based off the stories and characters described by children and library staff in Tease. We then raised funds to allow Fleance Forkuo, a Ghanaian illustrator to complete the illustrations, based on photos of Tease. We have so far printed 1000 copies, and have so far distributed these across 12 communities; we are also developing sales of the book through the Book Nook and it is being placed on the Ghana Library Authority App.

Part II of Kwame's adventures has been devised with the Abofour community, and is ready to be illustrated and printed. We need £1000 to allow us to print another 1000 copies, alongside another £400 to may for the illustration work from Fleance Forkuo. The reaction to the first book, showed us that these stories, set in contexts students understand, can significantly increase interest in reading in the EduSpots communities.

The Sevenoaks School EduLit team have been taking part in a number of fundraising ventures. Anne Durnford completed a sponsored 100km run in 10 days. She now has a new target – to extend it to a total of 100 miles between the 8th January (the first day of lockdown lessons) and 8th March (the first day back in the classroom).

Any support is warmly welcomed with £1 providing 1 book!
