Hello friends! (Disclaimer, this is kinda long but will definitely be worth a read...)
As I’m sure you were all aware this coming week (Monday 31st to Friday 4th) is National School Meals Week (yes it is a real thing) and so I decided to partake in a little fundraising challenge while raising awareness of something else vaguely school meals related.
In the UK at the moment, around 21% of children on free school meals make it to university, compared to around 85% of children from independent schools. By supporting my favourite educational charity, Teach First, we can help close the gap of educational inequality.
“But how?” I hear you ask. Well...
A quick Google search told me school meals cost on average £437 per child per year, which works out as £11.20 per week, so I’ve challenged myself to live off £11.20 for breakfast lunch and dinner for National School Meals Week (to put that into perspective I usually spend at least around £40 a week on food – what can I say, I’m a growing boy).
The money raised goes towards Teach First’s “Futures” programme, which gives sixth formers from underprivileged backgrounds access to opportunities that can help them get to uni – from attending open days, to help with applications to yearlong mentoring. So £15 can fund a student attending a uni open day, £25 can train a mentor for a Futures participant.
My initial target is £100 (but hopefully we can smash that) so all I’m asking from you lovely people is £2-3 (or a little more/less, every little helps). Thank you in advance for however you can help me out!
Lastly a shameless plug, the reason I’m raising money for Teach First is because I’m part of the Bristol Uni’s inaugural Teach First Society (TeachFirst Society Bristol) – so feel free to give that page a like if you want to brighten up my day even further!
