Ward L12 motomed challenge · 12 May 2021

We are the charity of Leeds Teaching Hospitals. We support NHS staff to deliver the best care for over a million patients and their families each year. Donations fund life-saving equipment, treatments, research and home comforts. Whatever will make the biggest impact to the people who need it most.

Story

The Challenge:

Dan will be cycling on the very old and tired Stroke Rehab Motormed for 7.5 hours on his day off (!!), on Wednesday 12th May to help the ward raise money for a much needed new machine.

To make the challenge more difficult he is aiming to cycle 140 miles (Coast to Coast) in total without a break!!

Dan's rationale for this challenge:

The Motomed on L12 is over 20 years old and the ward are in desperate need for a new one.

Dan's goal is to raise money for a new machine so patient's can progress their rehab by improving strength & endurance using active-passive training.

I know that many of us work closely with stroke patients, or know someone who has been affected by stroke - a new Motomed will really benefit the patients on L12 by helping to relearn lost movement patterns.

What is a Motomed?

A motomed is a device used in stroke rehabilitation therapy (similar to normal cycling), which allows for passive, motor-supported and active movements. Even with minimal muscle strength, users can do efficient active training during alternating active-passive training. Therapy can be conducted in a chair or wheelchair.

Motomed supports therapy and care staff, improves time management, reduces therapy costs, increases therapy efficiency and convinces with quality, usability and design.
