Zanskar Expedition · 30 November 2006

The Laburnum Boat Club is a community-based boating project by the Regents Canal in Hackney. Set up by local parents in the early eighties, the Club runs a programme of water-based activities throughout the year - primarily for children, young people and their families - but also for local community, education and welfare groups.

Story

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 12 inner city young people to undertake a major 15day expedition to India in August 2007.

The aims of the trip are three-fold

  • firstly to make the First Youth Descent of the Zanskar Gorge (the 'Grand Canyon of India') by raft and kayak. This will involve 2days warming up on the Indus, a 3day bus journey to the start of the gorge and 5days self-supported in the gorge itself
  • secondly to enhance the personal and social development for all involved, as the young people will be organising the trip themselves, including all the logistics and fundraising the £24,000 necessary for the trip to go ahead.
  • and thirdly to be a motivational tool for the young people of Hackney through a lecture tour produced by the group on thier return and taken to local youth groups and watersports centre to show what you can achieve if you work hard.
