Laila's Steps · 9 May 2019

Steps is the leading charity working for all those whose lives are affected by childhood lower limb conditions. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting individuals, families and carers affected by conditions which have an impact on the legs, hips or feet.

Story

Thank you for visiting our just giving page!  Shaun and I will be participating in Total Warrior on Saturday 22nd June 2019, and have just recently competed the Great North Swim!

We will be holding a Charity Ball on Saturday 9th November 2019 at the Lowwood Bay Resort and Spa to be able to raise as much money as we can for this amazing Charity, Steps!

Here is our story....

Myself and my fiancé Shaun welcomed our gorgeous daughter Laila in to the world on 17th August 2017.

We originally found out at my 20 week scan that she was going to be born with a small left foot, with just 3 toes on, and a shorter left leg as her leg was missing her fibula bone, her conditional is called Fibula hemimelia.

I think any parent would be worried when they find out something like this, not sure what to expect, and my biggest worry before she was born was how others would treat her.  Would they be mean,  would she be accepted?

Well this little girl has shown myself, Shaun and our whole family that nothing is EVER going to hold her back.

We decided after many visits to multiple surgeons that we would opt for a syme amputation, and that Laila would then be able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg for the rest of her life.  It was not an easy decision but we are confident this was the right decision.

On the 16th January 2019 she had her surgery, at just 17 months old. Our little warrior was up and out of her cot in the hospital just 2 days after surgery, crawling up and down the ward like nothing had happened with the biggest smile on her face.

Then on 9th April we picked up her first prosthetic leg!  Within 4 days she was walking around holding my hand, and within a week she was walking unsupported (a bit unsteady) but unsupported none the less.

We have a long journey ahead of us still, but there is no doubt in our minds that Laila will live life to the fullest.  She is such a determined & wilful little girl, always smiling, we are blessed to have such an amazing little girl on our hands.

Currently children under the age of 18 in England are supplied with sports prosthetics on the NHS, however in Wales & Scotland this is not the case.  We would like to raise as much as we can to fund as many sports prosthetic for kids that are not able to get them on the NHS because ever child deserves the same opportunities!
