Swim the Lakes (66km in 13 lakes in a week) · 26 August 2022

ME Research UK exists solely to fund high quality biomedical studies into the causes and treatment of ME/CFS. This illness affects approximately 250,000 people in the UK but is neither well understood nor, in many cases, properly recognised. We fund highly regarded, peer-reviewed research worldwide.

Story

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK and over one million people in the USA – this is more than the number with HIV infection or multiple sclerosis. Many people with ME/CFS are unable to work fulltime, and up to a quarter are house- or bed-bound.

This is a cause very close to my heart and has had a massive impact on my family in recent years, altering lives. Sadly, its an illness grossly misunderstood & underfunded. ME Research UK exists to fund high-quality biomedical research into ME – to find its cause, to develop effective treatments, and ultimately to discover a cure.

For that reason, Will, Tom & myself are swimming the full length of every swimmable Lake in the Lake District in 1 week. This is a self organised event at a distance of 66km across 13 Lakes (the largest of which is 18km at Windermere). Something only a handful (to our knowledge) of people have done before.

We would be deeply grateful for any donations you can make to this cause.

Many Thanks,

Will, Tom & Joe.
