Farleigh Hospice - Sunrise Walk · 18 July 2010 ·

Farleigh Hospice provides hospice care & support to people affected by life-limiting illnesses. With approximately 40% of our annual running costs funded by the local NHS, we rely on the goodwill of the local mid Essex community to contribute to the £21,271 it costs to provide our services each day.

Story

On Sunday 18th July, 8 ladies woke up at 3.15am, yes that is am and not pm, and rushed to dress in what can only be described as funky 80’s gear.   This was the second year for some and the first year for others of partaking in the Sunrise Walk raising money for Farleigh Hospice.  We arrived at the Notley Discovery Centre for 4am still dark and with sleep still in our eyes but keen to get going along with about 290 other ladies.

At 5.04am we set off on the first leg of the journey only to be called back for a photo start, we rebelled and set off with others on the start of the 12 mile journey to Felsted and back to Notley along the .  It was here for the second year running that we took the wrong direction and ended up walking extra.  We sadly missed Sean from the office who was busy marshalling the first part of the route. We joined the other walkers further along the route including those that had set off some 20-30 minutes after us.   The first part of the route was hampered by a dodgy stile which one of the members of the team quickly dismantled to prevent the other walkers getting injured.   Early on we lost the quickest member of the team, Sarah Phillips, we frustrated at our slow pace strode ahead to beat us all home.

At the half way stage we were welcomed by two friendly faces from the office Nick and Nigel who were marshalling and very kindly took the half way photo. We also met up with the Lambert Chapman Fan Club as we were approached to have our photos taken with them.  At valuable chocolate and water were provided to the walkers and a welcome loo break.  Yet again we rebelled and managed to find an open door at the school to bypass the 20 minute queue for the portable loos.

The last stretch of the walk took us along the and was a welcome pathed walk from the fields we had endured on the first stretch.   At 9.05am we crossed the finish line to a cheer from the crowd and all left for a welcome foot rub and kip.

We hope to have raised £850 for Farleigh Hospice and thank all those that were kind enough to donate.   It still isn’t too late to enter a last minute donation.
