Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page.

Background

In the UK approximately 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital each year. Following a cardiac arrest, chance of survival decreases by around 10% per minute. As such it is vital that emergency treatment begins as soon as possible. Outside of the city, the chance of an ambulance arriving in less than 8 minutes is remote. But if a public access defibrillator is nearby, survival rates as high as 75% can be achieved.

Coast Medic have installed a number of public access defibrillators and provide the ongoing support.  As a marine charity, they regularly help the community of the Isles of Scilly and have already donated a defibrillator to the St Mary's Harbour authority.

The Need

The fire service at Land's End airport are responsible for providing immediate aid to any incident.  They are often first on scene of medical emergencies in the surrounding area of the airport.

The airport itself attracts a large number of visitors and locals going to and from the islands.  This is one of the UK's most remote airports and there are inevitable delays in the ambulance arriving on scene and this AED will significantly increase chances of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest.

Coast Medic will also provide the necessary training and on-going back up support.
