In memory of Nicola Jane Hawkins

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My sister Nicola had been a kidney patient since primary school. She endured years of needles, steroids and copious amounts of other medication on a daily basis, peritoneal and haemodialysis. Although travelling to the hospital several times a week became a more convenient 'home dialysing' routine for 8 hours a day, she was never able to be more than a couple of days away from a life saving machine. She had a successful transplant from her mum, which worked well for several years, before having to recommence dialysis. I never heard her complaining about all of this, she just got on with it. Somehow in the middle of all this 18 years ago, she gave birth to a daughter, Nadine.
During this time Nicola loved travelling, and would take full advantage of foreign medical facilities by booking her holidays around available 'slots' at the local hospitals (a valuable perk of the EU, which she was very animated about recently!). She also managed to explore India, and several countries in the far east .
Out of the blue last year, a 'live' donor and a perfect match saw Nicola receive a 2nd lifesaving kidney transplant. Unfortunately, years of strain on her body from all the previous dialysis resulted in a sudden and unexpected heart attack on 19th January. It was just two days after returning from a family holiday, celebrating mum's 80th birthday.
Nicola would want to help as many kidney patients as possible to achieve a full and adventurous life, just as she had managed.
It was her wish that instead of flowers, donations be made to KCUK
