My name is Laura Cartmill I am 31 years old I have a visual impairment myself I was born with an eye condition called ‘Aniridia’ which means I have no iris in either eye this is the coloured part of your eye this makes my eyes very sensitive to any lights bright days and cloudy days
I also have autism. Having this condition affects a lot of things in my life. Meeting new people, communicating and socialising can be difficult for me,, at times I struggle with being in a big crowd and loud noise. The severity of my conditions differs from day to day, but there is always a way around it
10 years ago, I joined a football team for people with varied disabilities. Since joining a team, my confidence has been built tremendously I can communicate and socialise better . Before joining football, I didn’t talk to anybody; now, I have more confidence, and I even helped with my football coach to coach the team (we were branded the ‘Dream Team’). this season 2021 I have been coaching with the Tavistock specials league 2 team we are involved in the Devon ability counts league it’s for everyone with all different disabilities to come along play football against different teams have fun and enjoy themselves and a fantastic way to socialise with others
I started football back in 2012 we have tournaments on a Sunday to play against other teams with all different disabilities at the touranment I now play for Tavistock specials ladies we take part in the Devon ability counts league it’s a great opportunity for players for all different disabilities to take part in a league and play football and socialise with others I am also involved with Newton abbot soccaability on a Saturday morning it’s for everyone with all different disabilities these 2 clubs have been very supportive to me they always organise a bright ball for me to use in the sessions and tournaments
I am also doing my football coaching course. possibly in the future I will be helping out with the juniors with all different disabilities
Thank you for reading my story and thank you for everyone’s support anything is possible 😊💟
