I’ve always fancied completing a charity challenge & I have always been envious of anyone (including Wez) who has completed the London Marathon, or even a 10K run, but I hate running…. with a passion. Last year’s company challenge was the London to Paris Bike Ride and the thought of sitting on a bike (& pedaling) for 5 days really didn’t appeal to me.
So, when this year’s challenge was released I jumped at the chance. How hard can it be!
In July 2014, I will be visiting The Small Isles in Scotland with 17 colleagues to climb the highest point of Rum, Eigg, Canna & Muck in just two days. A walk in the park you may think, but on day 1, I will be climbing the highest summits of Canna, Muck and Eigg (21km with 740m of ascent).
Day 2 will start early to climb the highest peak, Rum Cuillin where I will be hiking to the lofty summit of Askival, 812m (2650 feet). As well as being the highest peak on Rum, it is also one of the finest, with a narrow ridge leading to the summit & you can see the ridge in the photos on this page. That will be a challenge as you all know how clumsy I am! I don’t wear shoes with heels as I can’t be trusted, & even in flats I still manage to stumble around & fall over my own feet!
And why am I doing this you may ask? Well, it’s all in aid for Hope for Justice, a charity which exists to see the end of human trafficking and slavery in the UK, in our generation.
You may not think this is an issue in the UK, but last year, in Bristol alone, 20 people were rescued from this horrible crime with help from H4J. The charity believes this number represents just 10% of people actually being held against their will in Bristol, which I find shocking.
Hope for Justice help to rescue these victims from the abuse of human trafficking & then be involved in their restoration & pursue justice on their behalf & the money that you donate will help the charity find more victims & help them on the road to freedom.
Thank you so much for reading my story.
