Make 2nds Count is dedicated to making people living with secondary breast cancer count. We do this by raising funds to support specialist research into secondary breast cancer, extending and improving the quality of life for patients battling against this treatable yet incurable disease.

Story

Hi All,

A group of my 60+ amazingly awesome family, friends and I, are walking (or running) the 25 Miles (or part of it for some people) of the Ullswater Way in the Lake District on 27th April 2019 to raise money for a charity which is incredibly close to my heart, Make 2nds Count.

Make 2nds Count is the first charity of its kind in the UK, raising money for awareness and research into Secondary Breast Cancer. Set up last year, Lisa & Euan Fleming work to fund incredible research for new treatments and hopefully a cure! Funds raised will go directly to secondary breast cancer research in the form of the research team based at the University of Edinburgh, headed up by Dr Olga Oikonomidou, an academic consultant medical oncologist.

Secondary breast cancer is breast cancer which has spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Although secondary breast cancer can be treated, there is no cure. Unlike those living with primary breast cancer, there is no end of treatment, there is no remission. It’s estimated that 35,000 people are currently living with secondary breast cancer in the UK yet only 7% of the National funding for cancer goes towards this incurable disease. Make 2nds Count aim to address this imbalance.

In September 2017 I found a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer, however 3 months later I found out that the cancer had spread into my bones and liver, and was now classed as incurable. It was treatable, but treatment would last for the rest of my life. This was a devastating time for both me and all close to me - treatment has been tough but well worth it. I am hopeful that more and more treatments will come available which is why I am raising money!

Please give generously!

Thank you

Laura + AMAZING family & friends
