I have decided, along with 2 of my siblings, to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Heartburn Cancer U.K. in memory of our dear, beloved father, who we sorely miss every day. He lost his short battle with Oesophageal cancer in 2018, which he bravely fought to the very end. As a dietitian working in NHS for many years, I was always concerned that my father had chronic reflux and only took omeprazole as and when required. Nevertheless, I never imagined he would go on to develop terminal oesophageal cancer and it could spread so easily with minimal symptoms. My dad was very reluctant to push for any investigations regarding his reflux, mainly due to the thought of having an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. 

Heartburn Cancer U.K. charity have supported the launch of the Cytosponge, which is a much less invasive procedure that can be done in your GP surgery to diagnose Barrett’s oesophagus (pre-cancerous condition) and Oesophageal cancer.
