Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

In December 2017, after years of runner’s knee, in need of a New Year’s Resolution and a new sport to take up, a good friend of mine suggested I take part in a swim event for her charity, Aspire. Casually mentioning this idea to my family led to a wet suit Christmas present, and there was no backing out...

So, on August 18th, I will be swimming 3 miles across the sea, from Gosport on the south coast to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

I have spent these last months training in the pool (fighting for space amongst the speedos of Brixton), suffering from mild swimmer’s shoulder (I am not built for exercise), and even venturing out into the sea (no, the picture above is not of Ursula Andress).

Hearing a close friend speak about the great work of Aspire moved me to take part in what will for me be a very challenging event. I hope this page inspired you in turn to donate. Please be as generous as you can.
