Its has been estimated that more than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their life.
Cancer has played a role in both my family and work life.
Family
My mam has been diagnosed with renal cancer twice and is thankfully currently in the clear after a partial and full nephrectomy surgery. My grandad unfortunately died of gastric bowl cancer at the end of 2014 and my Nana was found to have developed cancer when she also died in 2014.
Work
The Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle is home to one of the largest most advanced Paediatric and Adolescent Haematology and Oncology department's in the UK, providing a comprehensive range of leading edge Oncology Services tailored to the specific needs of each patient, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Working in the Haematology laboratory in the Blood Sciences department at the RVI, part of our daily role is to aid in the diagnosis of the white blood cell and bone marrow cancer Leukaemia, and help provide safe supportive therapy via blood and platelet transfusions.
