Laura's Escape from Alcatraz Swim

Alcatraz 2025 · 21 June 2024 to 21 May 2025 ·
A couple of months ago I had a call from the very persuasive Dave Tonge telling me about another crazy challenge he was organising. This one, more than any is way out of my comfort zone!
As a child I was terrified of the sea, and everything in it and spent most of our family time at the beach on my dad’s shoulders! 🤪 I also suffered terrible eczema- which made swimming in the sea very painful.
But when he said it was to raise much needed funds for Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising I was sold. 💚
So May 2025, with a group of other loons, we will attempt to complete the infamous ‘Alcatraz Swim’
This swim is not for the faint hearted - it is very cold, has strong currents and potentially some unpredictable wildlife. 😱
Am I terrified? Absolutely! However, the fear I have is nothing compared to those facing cancer; their families and their friends. It is the cruellest of diseases and does not discriminate. Losing my dad to prostate cancer, my amazing mum fighting the disease now, and other loved ones lost,💔I know the pain it causes and how at times it can feel hopeless. However, Velindre, the Hospital of Hope, has been providing specialist care for over 65 years.
All money raised goes straight to Velindre- we pay our own flights, accommodation etc.
I know we ask a lot and I know it’s not easy - but we are always very grateful ❤️
Money raised for Velindre Charity helps fund ground breaking research and clinical trials, cutting edge treatments, specialist nurses, support services, therapies, equipment and so much more which are above those provided by the NHS – so donations really do have a significant impact on patients and their families.
Your donation will allow Velindre to continue to provide Hope for the future.
