Story
I'm doing this skydive on the 1st of August to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK, but also because it's on my "bucket list". As it's something I want to do, I am paying for the skydive out of my own pocket, which means 100% of the money you donate will go to the charity. So please give generously; it's a cause I really believe in, partly because my grandma's dementia meant I lost my only grandparent before I really ever got to know her.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, investing in world class, pioneering scientists who are driving forward research towards treatments, preventions and a cure.
Dementia is one of the biggest and most feared epidemics of our time, and the UK’s greatest medical challenge affecting over 820,000 people across the country. Surrounding those people is a network of family members and carers profoundly affected by the condition. In fact, around half the UK population is touched by dementia through a family member or close friend. My family included.
Outside the enormous social impact of dementia, it also poses a huge economic challenge. The cost of dementia to the UK economy is estimated to be £23bn - more than heart disease and cancer combined. In spite of this, and in spite of some recent Government research investment, scientists working on dementia are still outnumbered one to six by those working in cancer.
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. As research experts, they specialise in funding world-class, pioneering research at leading universities to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia. They believe science and innovation hold the key to defeating dementia and invest in the scientists learning more about the condition and its causes.
Their findings improve the lives of everyone affected by dementia now and in the future. Alzheimer’s Research UK forgespartnerships with Government and other key organisations to make dementia research a national priority.
