Lauren, her husband and two children, her mother, sister and her two children, and her aunt will all do a two-mile walk to raise money for ME/CFS research. The walk will take place near her mother’s home close to Orlando, Florida. ME/CFS, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, is a complex and devastating illness that impairs cognition, the immune system, energy metabolism, and the stress system. Many ME/CFS suffers are unable to carry out simple daily tasks and can become bed or house-bound. ME/CFS is not part of many medical school’s curriculum, so it is poorly understood, and often dismissed by doctors.
Lauren became severely ill with ME/CFS in 2011, and was forced to leave her teaching career. She was virtually bed-ridden through 2013. She persevered to find answers and expiramented with endless medications and treatments. She was able to marginally improve her symptoms, though continues to struggle with her health on a daily basis.
