Against The Flow - rowing across Europe · 4 April 2019

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is the world's leading medical humanitarian aid organisation. We work in over 70 countries - in conflict zones, natural disasters and epidemics. We are independent, neutral and impartial. We provide medical care where it's needed most.

Story

I'm attempting to row across Europe from the Black Sea to the North Sea via the Danube (2800 km) and the Rhine (1200 km). I will be rowing upstream, against the flow of the Danube. I will be self-supported, I will carry everything with me, stopping in villages and towns along the way to buy food.

It's an idea that has been brewing for a few years, and I decided to give it a go or forever be left wondering. I don't know if it's possible, and even if it is, it will certainly be demanding. I have relatively little training, and have rowed sliding sea boats twice - it's going to be a steep learning and fitness curve.

I won't be able to update this page regularly from the water, but please feel free to follow along on Twitter and Instagram: @LaurenceDyke. I will also be posting all my daily activity to Strava: strava.com/athletes/308807.

I would love to raise €4000 - one euro for every kilometre I hope to row.

Thank you for your support of Médecins Sans Frontières; they help people and save lives in the most troubled parts of the world - I can't think of anything more noble or worthwhile.
